Choosing Chess - Designing Chess Pieces for Printing

Image
OK so this project is perfect for me, I have had a beautiful (if I may brag a little) chess board that I made years ago for my cabinetmaking training at SAIT but I have never had any chess pieces to use with it so I am planning to print a full set at some point :D  The chess board that I made is comprised of a few different kinds of veneer and solid wood, including hickory, soire, a black stained reclaimed veneer as well as solid cherry and walnut. Because there are so many patterns and colours already in place on the board I wanted to keep the design simple-ish or at least geometric to balance the multiple wood grains.  Below is the chess board/ storage:   So from our peer-to-peer discussions the idea that seemed the most compelling was the geometric models that included some negative space that could be filled with another material. The ideas that seem to have the most opportunity for the material are a tinted resin that can fade to nearly transpa...

Printing a Statment Piece - Outsourced Wearable Object

Image
For the wearable outsourced object my ring design was based on geometric shapes and the formations found in pyrite. I started off with some basic intersecting cubes and then expanded on them to create a large intersecting frame around the basic ring design. The ring itself is made up of three rings the outer too rotated away from the center to support and contain the rest of the design. Below is the proof sheet for the three options for the rings as well as some images of sketches and the six rings options I started with. Some doodles of ring ideas, I was trying to  incorporate shapes inspired by nature, bubbles  and petals and such.  On the left is my proof sheet, the first ring is inspired by the patterns found in coral, the second is inspired by the cube formations found in pyrite (fools gold), and the last is a mountainscape (because I love mountains).  The coral inspired ring. This started off as a fern or tree shape that was ...
